p>Pat and Ron have developed a certification program for helping professional counselors who want to practice in the field of domestic violence offender treatment. This program is in association with the National Anger Management Association (NAMA). We recommend you view their website for information both about this program as well as anger management certification.
One of the highlights of this training program is that Ron and Pat are experts on brain change and have designed an individualized brain change program that you can utilize with your clients. This feature allows each offender to create and implement a personalized brain change program that is most meaningful to them and therefore decreases the likelihood they will relapse to domestic violence.
There are two levels of certification, DV Specialist Level One and DV Specialist Level Two.
Domestic Violence Specialist One is a 12 hour training. We occasionally offer this training live but you would be better off going to the NAMA website to purchase our 3 dvd set DV One Certification program. This is a condensed version of a 12 hour training we ran in North Carolina. It provides all the essential theoretical, historical and programmatic information you will need to qualify to offer educationally focused treatment. You'll need to pass a test that comes with the dvds. In addition to the dvds you will also receive a copy of Ron and Pat's text: Brain Change Curriculum for Domestic Violence Offender Treatment, a 190 page book that includes a 52 session curriculum with approximately 40 separate exercises and lecture topics. You will also receive a 13 session Participant Workbook that you can use with your clients if you plan to offer a brief treatment option for relatively minimal offenders. Note that we also sell separate 26 session and 52 session participant manuals. Note: to obtain Level One certification you will need to view the 12 hour training (via dvd or download), take and pass the test on that material, schedule and complete one 45-60 minute supervision session with Ronald Potter-Efron, and pay an application/administrative fee.
TO ORDER THE BRAIN CHANGE CURRICULUM FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OFFENDER TREATMENT and/or the 13,26 or 52 session PARTICIPANT MANUAL go to the NAMA website here: namass.org
Domestic Violence Specialist Two is intended for counselors who wish to offer more in-depth and/or longer d.v. offender treatment programs. Trainees must take 40 hours of training (which matches state provider training requirements in several states). Additional requirements include viewing a 6 hour dvd on ethics related to domestic violence concerns; reading 3-4 more assigned books (women's treatment; trauma; rage or shame; anger management); and scheduling and completing 3 additional supervision sessions; paying an administrative/application fee.
Note that Level Two applicants must have a state issued professional certificate or license in a relevant human services field and also must have professional liability insurance (individual or through an institutional employer).
Also note that all Level Two applicants must first complete Level One training . No exceptions will be made to ensure the necessary quality of core training components.
Please go to the NAMA website ( namass.org ) to learn the particular details about DV Level Two training. One requirement is that each participant receive at least 4 hours telephone/Skype or face to face supervision with Ron or Pat Potter-Efron.
Level One/Two Combination:
In order to avoid paying two application fees (Level One and Two) participants may choose to take both training sequentially within a six month time frame. If done in this manner the Level One application fee ($125) will be waived upon completion of Level Two.
PLEASE NOTE THAT MANY STATES HAVE SPECIFIC DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROVIDER TRAINING REQUIREMENTS THAT MAY OR MAY NOT BE RIGIDLY ENFORCED. OUR TRAINING MAY NOT COMPLETELY ADDRESS THESE REQUIREMENTS. WE MAY BE ABLE TO HELP ASCERTAIN SPECIFIC STATE REQUIREMENTS BUT YOU SHOULD INQUIRE ABOUT SUCH REQUIREMENTS BEFORE BEGINNING OUR TRAINING PROGRAMS. Individuals who enroll can focus upon of of two options: brain change or cognitive-behavioral change methodology.
